There are some holidays that you might plan for months, or even years, agonising over every minor detail. In other cases, you might look to get away at short notice, simply because you decide that you need to get away.

If you’re looking to travel at short notice, a number of potential destinations might appeal. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Classic European City-Break Favourites

Certain European cities have long been favoured by the travelling classes, as they’re reliable at just about every time of year. A visit to Berlin or Prague might expose you to a winning combination of nightlife, culture, and accessibility. They’re also within a short flight, and accessible via most large airports, so you can get to them without inconveniencing yourself too much. For last-minute holidays, in other words, they’re a great choice.

Sunlit Beaches & Coastal Escapes

What if you’d like to get away from the business and bustle of the average city? In these situations, you might look to find a nice stretch of coastline. You might lounge on a beach, soaking up the sunshine; or, you might go for a long hike along an inspiring, scenic series of sea-battered cliffs.

The good news is that the UK is an island nation. There are plenty of great coastal escapes here, and around our immediate neighbours. On the other hand, you might travel to the Mediterranean and enjoy one of the many amazing beach resorts there. If you’re willing to travel during the ‘shoulder’ seasons, or even during winter, then you’ll save a considerable amount of money, but you’ll get a little bit of sunshine, too.

Less-Known European Gems & Alternative Spots

If you’d like to explore what Europe really has to offer, then you might look beyond the obvious tourist spots, and see some of the more obscure parts of the continent. These might offer a more authentic flavour of the local culture, unadulterated by excessive tourism. Often, the less busy spots are cheaper, and more rewarding, too. If you’re looking for recommendations, there’s no shortage of them on modern social media apps, like TikTok and Instagram.

Domestic Getaways and UK-based Escapes

Of course, the easiest way to go on holiday at short notice is to simply stay within the UK. That way, you’ll cut out much of the hassle associated with airports, travel documentation, and foreign languages. Many of the UK’s best tourist spots attract visitors from across the world – so why not take the time to appreciate them yourself?
